Helpful Tips to Stay Warm and Cozy This Winter

  1. Thermostat- Keep your thermostat at the coolest temperature that is still comfortable. Make sure the fan is on Auto , so it runs only when the system is heating. When you’re not home or asleep, turn thermostat back 10-15 degrees, which can save you around 10% on annual heating costs.
  2. Window / Sunshine- Open curtains during those sunny days to allow the sun in to naturally heat your home. Close windows at night to reduce any chill from cold windows. Consider replacing old and drafty windows.
  3. Fireplace- Keep your dampers closed, when not in use. Otherwise it’s like leaving a window open and allowing all that warm air out the chimney. If you do not use your fireplace, consider plugging & seal the chimney flue.
  4. Weather seal- Consider caulking windows that need it. Use weather sealing on windows & weather strips for large gaps and/or door draft stoppers on your doors. Keeping the cold air out of rooms, and insulating your home will help heat costs.
  5. Humidifier- Cold air doesn’t hold water vapor like warm air, so more humidity will make your home feel warmer.
  6. Keep your feet warm- Wear socks or slippers. Your feet help regulate your body temperature, so when your feet are warm – you feel warm.
  7. Area Rugs- Rugs can provide an extra layer of insulation on your floors, keeping your feet & room more comfortable.
  8. Blanket- Throw a blanket on while sitting on the couch or an electric blanket on your bed.  This will keep you toasty while not turning up your heat or your electric bill.
  9. Space Heaters-  These actually consume a lot more energy and cost more than you think. They also should not be left alone, and can be dangerous if they are older, not properly maintained or not used as instructed. For ex/ Two , 1500 watt space heaters for 8 hours a day cost about 120$ a month. You can find out just how much this will cost you on any space heater calculator online.
  10. Insulation- Consider the age of your roof / attic insulation, and replace or add as necessary. Also your basement or garage could need extra insulation, especially around windows and doors.  These little tips extras could mean big savings in your heating costs.
