5 Common Water Heater Issues | American Water and Plumbing

4 Sump Pump Winterization Tips

Susan Gentry

Part of home winterization involves the sump pump or the emergency pump that directs floodwaters out of your basement. Since these essential devices live in subterranean spaces, they are vulnerable to the cold without the right care.
Use these tips to protect your sump pump throughout the coldest months of the year.

4 Ways To Protect Your Sump Pump This Winter

1. Maintain A Warm Interior Temperature

Keep the temperature in your home above 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent a frozen sump pump. While hot air rises and cold air falls, the right internal temperature provides sufficient heat to warm your basement. If you are still concerned about freezing issues, add a space heater. Use one that automatically turns off when it gets too hot or falls over.

2. Insulate The Discharge Hose & Intake Line

Cover the intake line as well as the discharge hose, or part that directs water away from your residence. Use heating tape or other insulating materials recommended in the pump’s manual. Depending on how cold your region gets in the winter, you may want to bury the discharge hose in addition to insulating it. You can also remove the discharge hose during long cold spells to keep it from freezing and cracking. If it does freeze, turn the pump off and remove water from the pit while the hose thaws.

3. Clean The Pit Of Debris

Remove all gunk, dirt, and other debris from your sump pump pit to avoid intake and discharge hose blockages. A clogged pit prevents the device from functioning normally and can result in wintertime basement floods. If your pit is still clogged despite your efforts, call your local plumbing company to schedule professional cleaning services.

4. Test The Pump Periodically

Add a few cups of water to your sump pump about once a month during winter to check its function, especially during periods of intense snow-melt. Remember to reattach the discharge hose if necessary and to check the pit for debris accumulations.
