Forget the Fluoride

Susan Gentry

There are many things that get added to your water before it ever reaches your tap.  Today, we’ll discuss one of the most dangerous – fluoride.  Fluoride has been linked to everything from birth defects and brain damage to cancer and infertility yet millions of people ingest it every day. There is virtually no regulation or oversight regarding dosage and it’s all perfectly legal.  Here are 10 reasons to remove fluoride from your drinking water.

1.  Fluoride is added to water for medical purposes

Fluoride is the only chemical added to domestic water supplies strictly for the purposes of medical treatment.  It is supposed to reduce tooth decay which makes it the same as any other medication that may be prescribed by a doctor.  However, the government never asked if you agreed to receive medical treatment for tooth decay.  They simply  added it to your water and decided for you.

2.  It’s impossible to control the dosage

Since there’s no way to regulate the amount of water a person drinks from a certain supply, fluoride dosages cannot be controlled.  The more fluoridated water a person drinks, the more likely he or she is to experience adverse effects.  Also, since fluoride is added to entire water supplies, everyone within your geographic area is exposed to it regardless of individual sensitivity.  There is no other medication that is given to infants, children, adults, and the elderly in equal strength and dosage.

3.  Fluoride is not an essential nutrient

There is no medical research that identifies fluoride as an essential nutrient for human beings.  It’s not a mineral, a vitamin, an enzyme, or a hormone.  No disease (not even tooth decay) is caused by a fluoride deficiency and not a single biological process has been shown to require fluoride.

4.  Fluoride builds up in the body

The kidneys are only able to excrete 50-60% of the fluoride ingested on a daily basis.  The rest is stored in calcifying structures like the bones and pineal gland.  Since the body doesn’t use fluoride in any of it’s natural processes, the remaining 40-50% remains in the body and accumulates over time.

5.  Fluoride is a topical treatment, not an internal one

Even when used to treat tooth decay, fluoride is applied topically (directly to the teeth and gums) not taken internally.  This means that the most effective application of fluoride is tooth paste, not drinking water.  Swallowing water containing fluoride doesn’t actually benefit the teeth at all.

6.  High doses of fluoride are going to babies

Human breast milk is extremely low in fluoride.  This means that babies were never supposed to ingest it.  When you take into consideration their reduced size and their dependence on an all-liquid diet, bottle-fed babies receive more fluoride into their bodies than anyone else.  They are also the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of fluoride build-up since the accumulation of fluoride begins at birth.

7.  Fluoride already comes from lots of other sources

There is no lack of fluoride in our everyday lives.  Think of all of the fluoride you ingest from food and drinks made with fluoridated water, dental products, and sources you may not have even considered.  Fluoride can be found in mechanically deboned meat, tea, and pesticide residue found in our produce.

8. Fluoride can cause lead to leach from pipes, brass fittings, and soldered joints

Even if you don’t see the damage that fluoride causes every day, what about lead?  We all know that lead can cause serious health issues.  Tightly controlled laboratory experiments have shown that fluoride when combined with chlorine (another dangerous additive in your tap water) can actually cause lead to leach out of pipes, brass fittings, and soldered joints into the water you drink.

9.  Fluoride affects the pineal gland

Fluoride has been shown to build up in the pineal gland to very high amounts over time.  Fluoride accumulation can actually reduce the bodies production of melatonin and bring about an early onset of puberty.  At least four independent studies have shown that prenatal fluoride exposure can cause fetal brain damage.

10. Fluoride can affect fertility

Prolonged exposure to fluoride in drinking water causes damage to the male reproductive system.  Low sperm count and low testosterone levels have been found in subjects tested in India and China.  There are even studies that show lower fertility among people in fluoridated communities than in non-fluoridated communities.

At the end of all of this, a few things are certain.  Fluoride isn’t necessary to our drinking water and actually presents many serious health risks.  While the levels on any given day may fall within government regulations, the eventual accumulation of fluoride in our bodies can be a factor in everything from low IQ to arthritis to cancer to brain damage.
