Spring Cleaning For Your Plumbing

Susan Gentry

Try these “Spring Cleaning ” tips for the plumbing in your home, for increased efficiency and usage.

  • Clean shower heads/ faucets for mineral deposits & calcium build up, which can reduce efficiency and flow.
  • Check faucets for leaks or drips. Depending on the leak, you can lose up to 8 gal per day.
  • Check toilets for leaks, toilet bowl cracks, and make sure that it flushes properly.
  • Clean all drain strainers from debris, hair/soap/toothpaste build up to prevent clogs or low flow.
  • Check the water supply valves for proper working order. They tend to stick or corrode when they are not turned often. I would suggest doing this at least once a year.
  • Check hot water setting- it should not be any higher than 120 degrees. This prevents scalding and reduces energy use.
  • Remove corrosion & sediment from your Hot Water Heater by draining several gallons from the tank. This will increase efficiency and prolong it’s life
  • Pour water ( approx 1 gal) down drains not used often, such as floor drains or whirlpools. This fills the trap and prevents odor. If drains are slow to drain, check for clog. In the event of a flood, these should be prepared to drain.
  • Check pipes and garbage disposals under sinks for leaks
  • Check your sump pump to verify it is working properly by dumping a few gallons/buckets of water into it and watch for discharge.
  • Check outside and garage hose bibs/faucets to make sure you didn’t have a frozen pipe or you may have a leak inside the house, the first time you turn it on.
  • Check your exterior drainage, such as gutters and downspouts for clogs. clean out if needed.
  • Know where & how to turn off water at every sink, toilet, washing machine, refrigerator, AND the main water valve to the house. In the event of an emergency, you know how to turn these items off and stop the flow of water.
  • Rotate your filters in your drinking water systems or In-line filters.
  • Check your Water softener, to make  sure it’s regenerating properly and the tanks are not leaking. Check your salt level, and fill as needed. This should be checked every season or quarterly, for optimal performance and efficiency.
